Because there were no stories, there were no memories
Because there were no memories, there were no traditions
Because there were no traditions, there was no past
Because there was no past, there was no future...
Children from two primary schools in each of four London boroughs worked with the Unicorn on an intensive storytelling, drama and music project: Story into Theatre.
With two actors, a musician and the Unicorn’s Education Director, the children accompanied the character Anansi, the father of stories, on a journey to find ‘the place where stories live’. Starting with a performance devised by the team and the Unicorn’s Associate Director, the participants in each school worked for two days towards a performance of their own making. The Friday of each week brought together the ‘partner schools’ to share their work with families, friends, teachers, governors and pupils.
The project culminated in a visit to the Unicorn’s main stage production, Revenge of the Story Spirits; a chance to experience traditional stories re-told by Jan Blake, one of Britain’s leading storytellers.
The participating schools were: Ashmount Junior and Hungerford Primary (Islington), Essendine Primary and St Mary Magdalene’s CE (Westminster), Sudbourne Primary and Corpus Christi RC (Lambeth), Alfred Salter and Gloucester Primary (Southwark).
The project was funded by London Arts Board.
