Storytelling Festival (2006)

'It is through the stories we tell and the stories we hear that we come to understand ourselves and others.'

'There has never been a human society in which people did not tell stories.'

In May and June 2006 seven storytellers from across the UK and Ireland came to the Unicorn to engage the imaginations of both young and old with wondertales, traditional stories, myths, folktales, rhymes, riddles and chants.

Five weeks of storytelling performances by storytellers June Peters, Sandra Agard, Susanna Stelle, Kevin Graal, Fiona Collins, Kate Corkery and Ben Haggarty were accompanied by storytelling workshops offered to primary schools.

In addition, two whole-day teacher storytelling courses were designed. These courses were hugely successful and gave the participants the opportunity to explore creative ideas and ways of bringing storytelling into the classroom. June Peters' A Bag of Story Magic session for Foundation/Key Stage1 teachers enabled teachers to develop ways of working as storytellers and storymakers with young children. Susanna Steele and artist/illustrator Sophie Herxheimer's Imagine a Story course enabled KS2 teachers to gain confidence as storytellers and explored ways of working visually with stories in the classroom.
