Lord Mayor's Show (2003)
*

The Lion and the Unicorn were fighting for the crown,
The Lion chased the Unicorn all around the town,
Some gave them white bread and some gave them brown,
Some gave them plum cake and chased them out of town.

Unicorn Theatre was one of the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities for 2003 and the Show was an important occasion for the Unicorn Theatre to celebrate its relationship with the City of London and its children.

Unicorn’s Education team worked with a Year 5 class from Bigland Green Primary School, Tower Hamlets, on Unicorn’s entry for the Lord Mayor's Show. The Heraldic Symbol of the Lion and the Unicorn and an ancient nursery rhyme (see left) were used as stimulus for the children’s exploration and development of a theme for the parade, guided by the Unicorn team.

The team was comprised of a designer, drama practioner, three actor/musicians and a composer. For eight sessions the children and the team created costumes, songs, music and movement that expressed the symbolic relationship between the Lion and the Unicorn and complimented the theme of the parade  - ‘a city in tune’.

On the day of the parade, a 5 metre tall white sparkling Unicorn that could rear impressively on its hind legs joined the team. It led the children, artists, Unicorn staff and volunteers as they took pride of place near the front of the parade, singing their composed songs and wearing eye-catching costumes and individually decorated headdresses. The day was enjoyable and unforgettable for all involved, and was captured live by the BBC. The Unicorn Theatre was invited back to participate in the 2004 Lord Mayor’s Show.

Unicorn Theatre’s participation in the Lord Mayors Show was supported by the Corporation of London, Sir Robert McLain Limited and Robert Thorne.
