Transformations (2004)

“Make it like stepping into another world. When you get your tickets, make it like you step through an arch, a doorway in to something completely different.”
Victor, Year 6 pupil

A site-specific short film capturing the magic and transforming power of theatre. Filmed on location in Southwark around the site of the new Unicorn Theatre building  with a cast of Year 6 pupils from Tower Bridge Primary School

Unicorn Education has undertaken a daring, trail-blazing process with a class of Young Consultants at Tower Bridge Primary School over the last three years, involving them in close consultation about the design of their new theatre building. To celebrate the end of this phase of the project, the pupils spent their final weeks in primary school making a film, which will feature as part of the opening events at the opening of the new theatre in autumn 2005.

Transformations is a film about theatre, about this theatre in this place at this time for these children. It is also about theatre everywhere. About its power to transform, and its capacity to transport us to new and imagined worlds.

It was made against the physical backdrop of the More London site, the streets of Southwark, the Theatre Royal Stratford East and the Unicorn Theatre in its incomplete state. It is a creative tribute to the pupils’ involvement and records for posterity the faces and places in this particular phase in the long life of the Unicorn, an episode on its journey to its new home.

The project supported by the Pool of London Partnership, on behalf of the London Development Agency.
