Helver's Night
by Ingmar Villqist, translated by Jacek Laskowski
(Poland)

On the eve of a political uprising, which recalls the midnight round up of the Jews by the SS, a childless mother, and a motherless child, seek their happiness first in the oppression and then the salvation of each other. This play deals with how the increasing militarism of a society seeps into even the most domestic of settings. The show explores how easily people can be manipulated in times of mass hysteria and how human beings cope when they have nowhere else to run.

Ingmar Villqist has been nominated twice for the Polityka Award in 2000/01.
