"The Best Thing We Have Is Our Imagination..."

★★★★ 'one of the most powerful, most compelling pieces of theatre for audiences of any age this year' Reviews Hub
★★★★ 'timely, powerful and moving' The Stage
★★★★ 'junior drama which packs a punch' Londonist

We're excited to be bringing Sally Gardner’s dazzlingly original and award-winning dystopian novel to the stage. Using live drawing, cameras and projection, this world première expresses the world of the book and the extraordinary spirit of its main character, 15-year-old Standish Treadwell.

In a sinister 1950s Britain, dark government forces are at work and spies and surveillance are everywhere. Standish tells us his story as he begins to unravel the dark secrets of the violent and oppressive Motherland and form a plan to try to save his best friend and uncover the truth, no matter what.

This is an utterly gripping and deeply moving story for young audiences about protecting the ones you love, and the courage it takes to do the right thing.

Please note: in keeping with the original book, there are some affecting moments of violence in the storytelling. These moments are described and depicted by the narrator, but not acted out. These are powerful short scenes which convey the danger that Standish is in and the perilous and ugly regime that he is surviving. There is also one single use of slightly strong language. Please contact our Box Office team if you would like more information about the show.

★★★★ 'this brave creation should certainly be applauded for not pulling any punches, and sensitively delivering some hard-hitting theatre, to all too often patronised young audiences.' Londonist

'Wow, it was very powerful... Brilliant performance by the lead actor. We rushed straight downstairs to buy the book.'

'Demanding, thought provoking, provocative, amazing, surprising, clever, sinister, timely.'

'It was a good show, great production and acting. Great to see the show content did not play down to young people, but challenged them.'

'The piece was beautifully and carefully staged. The themes were very challenging, and exciting and also very brave to put in front of such a young audience.'

'I thought it was brilliant. The acting was superb and I loved the poetry of the text. Really great. And I usually dislike Dystopian!'
