The Magnificent Life of Claudia Jones - digital project

An online performance created and performed by young people celebrating the life of Claudia Jones, a founder of Notting Hill Carnival.

An online performance created and performed by young people celebrating the life of Claudia Jones, a founder of Notting Hill Carnival.

This new digital theatre film, launched the week that the Notting Hill Carnival was due to take place, has been created as part of our Collaborate Learning Programme with 12 students from The Grey Coat Hospital C of E Secondary School.

Celebrating the life and achievements of Claudia Jones - a lifelong civil rights activist and one of the original founders of the Notting Hill Carnival - this online performance is a fictional account that imagines moments from her life and the people she might have known and influenced.

The Grey Coat Hospital is our current Collaborate partner. Collaborate is a year-long, partnership that includes theatre visits, workshops and an intensive devising project with professional theatre-makers. Students would usually perform their devised theatre piece on the Unicorn's stage but this year, due to the pandemic, we decided to work together online.

Over the course of a week, the students, led by director Stevan Mijailovic and movement director David Gilbert, researched Jones and brought to life imagined characters and key moments, creating scenes by filming themselves in their own homes. The students were greatly impacted by what they learnt and found powerful resonances to today's world, particularly in relation to the Black Lives Matter movement.
